6/11/2013... with Joan Baez singing
in Charlottesville Va
in the foothills of the noble blue
ridge mtns
She' great, so full of heart and
soul
and good rhythm too
makes you want to clap
and so we do
and lots of us sort of dancing
and even rockin' a little
as if in a sort of worship
Singing Hard Times Come Again No
More
She introduces her accompanying
musicians
"Now a Donavan song"
This all takes me back to the late
'60s
(She's good on that guitar)
I interviewed Joan Boaz for Time
Magazine
About the groundswell of resistance
To our country continuing to pursue
the Viet Nam war
Then raging, many dying
Joan's partner was about to go to
prison than be inscripted
"Why don't you just run to
Canada?" I asked
He just smiled
Now she's singing: "I believe in
God -- and God Begun" (I think)
Afterwards, "My mom died
recently at age 100
She liked men... "
Now singing Swing Low Sweet
Chariot
Comin' for me
A band of angels
Comin' for to carry me home...
All are clapping and cheering
"Thank you," she says
It's getting dark here
So easy to davven to this music
Now singing House of the Rising
Sun
As a sophmore he was elected
President of the Stanford student body
He dropped out of college to make
his stand to end the the war, even to go to prison
(A band of angels coming for me)
As we were leaving the San Francisco
cafe
Where we three had met and talked
about the active resistance in America
[At the time they both were notable
players in this story]
As we were leaving Joan smiled and
said to me,
"You don't get it yet,
Phil."
She leaned forward and kissed me
Which I am recalling fondly this
evening
Listening to this remarkable
musician-singer.
